Supernormal

Supernormal is a design studio that creates architecture, urbanism, technology, and contemporary culture. It holds Elizabeth's work in professional practice including built work, practice-based research, and urban strategy.

The work of Supernormal imagines and stewards a better world through the design of spaces and processes that bring dignity and delight to more people and places; in the beauty of the normal, the mundane, and the basic; in the power of design to translate the best parts of humanity into the scalable systems that shape the social and natural spaces of our shared 21st century world. Projects for clients in the public and private sectors include innovative and award-winning approaches to housing design, learning environments, adaptive re-use of historic buildings, spatial strategy, and urban technology.

Supernormal purposefully operates between design for the specific and generic to create actionable change in our built environment. From the start, the practice has embodied and explored the tension between architectural form and urban systems. Projects ask hard questions about issues of scale and scalability, of systems and systematization. Why is our built world as it is? What drives it and makes it tick? The firm is interested in the the DNA of urban form, and in how operating upon it can produce an authentic, meaningful, and relevant built world.

Elizabeth Bowie Christoforetti is the founder and design director of Supernormal, which is based in Cambridge, MA.
